The Teaching Team
Heathfield Summer School is fortunate to have an excellent team of teachers who return each summer. During the year some work as English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers overseas and others teach and lecture in Britain. They have a range of different ages, qualifications and experience but share great enthusiasm and a love of teaching the girls at Heathfield.
Director of Studies
Joe O’Dowd has been at Heathfield since 2008 when he came to us as Senior Teacher. In 2009 he took over as Assistant Director of Studies and in 2010 was promoted to Director of Studies. Joe has been working in English Language Teaching for over twenty years, mostly with International House, one of the world’s leading EFL teaching organisations, and has held positions in teaching, teacher training and management. Joe holds the CELTA and DTEFLA teaching qualifications as well as the IH Certificate in Young Learner teaching, a programme on which he has also tutored, and the International Diploma in Language Teaching Management (IDLTM). Joe is an authorised examiner for Cambridge ESOL and is currently working as a freelance EFL teacher in San Sebastián (Spain), where he lives.
Assistant Director of Studies
Lyndsey Thompson has an MA in Hispanic Studies and has been working as an English Language Teacher for almost ten years in Chile, Portugal and Bulgaria. She holds the CELTA and DELTA teaching qualifications, and has held positions within teaching, teacher training and management. Lyndsey is currently working as Education Development Manager at International House Sofia, where her EFL teaching has ranged from pre-primary and primary students to teenagers and adult classes, as well as corporate business groups. Lyndsey first worked as a teacher at Heathfield in 2016 and in 2022 was promoted to Assistant Director of Studies.
Joe and Lyndsey are supported by a strong team of teachers, led by a university lecturer, Dr Emma Newport, who teaches the most advanced General English group and our special English with Style course for older girls.
Heathfield staff are qualified and experienced teachers who specialize in English as a Foreign Language and who are passionate about the education of girls and young women. We choose a balance of older and younger staff and of teachers who specialise in primary level teaching and those who work with older students. A number of our staff live and work overseas during the academic year, including in some of Europe’s top English language teaching schools and university departments. Other staff teach English in schools and further education colleges in Great Britain.
