English with Style – Director’s Welcome
Poppy Madaras has a First Class Honours degree in French and Italian and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education as a Modern Foreign Languages teacher, as well as the CELTA English language teaching qualification. She has taught in France and Italy and has been working at Heathfield since 2015. Poppy joined the very first English with Style course as a Student Assistant and after teaching on the course for several years has now taken over as the Director of English with Style.
English with Style is designed for a bright generation of girls who want to learn about British life and culture and, at the same time, are keen to explore their own place as young women in the world. English with Style is unlike any other programme on offer – it is all about having fun and developing and celebrating your best self! You will meet and make some of your best friends at Heathfield and will enjoy a summer of unforgettable experiences…
Innovation and Inspiration is this year’s theme. With young women like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai leading the way in challenging and changing the world, at English with Style we will celebrate young women and have designed a programme just for older teens. Throughout the week, English with Style students live in Wyatt House, a separate boarding house just for older students.
You will enjoy a London theatre visit to Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the world, and a chance to look portraits of and by inspirational women in The National Portrait Gallery. A second trip will take you to a beautiful stately home called Dorney Court and to Eton High Street (where the famous school is situated). Our course will explore personal development, with an emphasis on developing confidence, resilience, and tolerance; we will also look at the kinds of life skills necessary for living, studying and working in an international community.
We debate global issues and as there are many nationalities represented on the course, we have plenty of lively conversations and you will have a chance to share these discussions with British students as well. For those interested, we discuss how to apply to university and can offer support and advice on preparing to study in the UK.
In addition to all of this, you will enjoy: meeting the women from Standing Tall, two former models, who help you walk and present yourself with confidence; receiving facial care and subtle make-up from SpaceNK; creating and hosting your own Ascot Jubilee tea party; taking part in design and textile classes; having a well-being evening with massage and relaxing with yoga; taking part in an evening of music and dance at the Talent Show; and attending the final night Farewell Party.
English with Style is about being inspired – and inspiring others! I hope you enjoy looking at the photos here and on the main page of our activities and the events that we have held. Please also watch our English with Style film which includes film and photos from the last few years https://www.heathfieldsummerschool.co.uk/summer-fun/
I look forward to welcoming you as a student on our English with Style course – the only one of its kind in the UK!
With warmest wishes,
