International Summer School and Summer Camp for Girls

I love Heathfield because there are lots of choices for the activities, the staff are very nice and I made lots of friends here. I liked cookery best because the food is very yummy and tennis coaching too because I love tennis and the coach is very nice.

Victoire, 12, France

The best activities were hockey, football and swimming plus making beauty products and the discos.

Mariko, 14, Japan

I joined Heathfield as an activities staff member in 2005 as I was impressed by the enormous range of activities and the no-expense spared attitude to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the girls.

Activities and the Social Programme

Heathfield offers girls a fun-packed and educational social programme for all ages through a range of activities, balancing creative, cultural, artistic and sporting options. Many of these activities are shared with the British girls on Summer Camp so overseas girls can practise their English with native speakers while having fun.

Each year we have a special course theme and in 2020 this will be Friendship without Borders. Our Houses and our Shows and Festivals will all be inspired by this theme.

We change what is on offer from week to week. Options include art, crafts, photography, drama, music, floristry, hair and beauty and a whole range of field, water and racquet sports. There are also big school events such as discos, film nights and American country dancing.

Activities Inset 2 kayaking

By the end of her stay at Heathfield, a summer student might have baked a chocolate brownie, made a soap, done a somersault on the trampoline, created a beautiful flower arrangement, tried cricket, danced to the sound of the Scottish bag pipes or a hip-hop hit, worn her own fashion creations on the cat-walk, produced a painting on glass, learned how to roll a kayak and enjoyed a relaxing hour of yoga!

Festivals and Shows

We believe in getting all the girls involved in whole-school events which will give them a new range of experiences while working together, using their English and developing new skills. Our Festival Afternoons, where staff offer a range of different themed activities, and our Evening Shows, in which girls create their own performances, are extremely popular with the students.

Girls are all placed in one of four Houses which are groups designed to allow different nationalities to meet, mix and make friends. Houses compete against each other in a variety of fun activities including quizzes, arts competitions, sports tournaments and a swimming gala.

Senior and Junior Activities

A large number of our activities are divided by age group so, for example, in art or cookery, the groups of older girls will be doing something much more complicated than younger students, but we also have options just for seniors or juniors.

For senior girls many activities are designed to stretch their English and challenge them to think and discuss but we also have all sorts of other special options. Here are some examples: Model United Nations; debating & Any Questions forum; Culture Club & Film Club; ‘pub style’ quiz; ‘Bake Off’ cookery competition, spinning cycles & fitness suite; basketball versus the staff team; aqua aerobics; team building; yoga and relaxation; special trips such as looking round an Oxford College, a ‘coffee break’ in Ascot or Bracknell and a visit to the Ascot Races – for girls aged 16 plus.

Our junior students enjoy taking part in all sorts of fun and games but the following activities are specially designed for them: treasure or scavenger hunts; giant board games; face-painting; circle and party games; puppets; friendship bracelets; biscuit decoration; ‘crocodile egg hunt’ water balloon game; special trips such as Hobbledown Farm, The Look Out Science Activities Centre and Model Village.

Activities Staff

Heathfield’s Activities Director is an experienced teacher who has pastoral experience as a Head of House and is a keen sportsman. He is assisted by an Arts and Entertainment Coordinator and an Art Coordinator and together they lead a team of more than 20 staff – sports teachers, coaches and pool life guards as well as trained artists and dancers, superb cooks and talented musicians and actors. Private tennis coaches offer individual lessons on site and horse riding is available at our local stables.

Please do look at the details and photographs of some of our activities and events on the separate pages to give you an idea of the huge range we offer and the fun the girls have while taking part.

Heathfield School: the year-round school accepts girls as full and weekly boarders and day girls from age 11 to 18.
