International Summer School and Summer Camp for Girls

I love Heathfield because there are lots of choices for the activities, the staff are very nice and I made lots of friends here. I liked cookery best because the food is very yummy and tennis coaching too because I love tennis and the coach is very nice.

The best activities were hockey, football and swimming plus making beauty products and the discos.

Mariko, 14, Japan

I joined Heathfield as an activities staff member in 2005 as I was impressed by the enormous range of activities and the no-expense spared attitude to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the girls.

Activities and the Social Programme

Heathfield offers girls a fun-packed and educational social programme through a range of activities, balancing creative, artistic and sporting options. Many of these activities are shared with the British girls on Summer Camp so overseas girls can practise their English.

We change what is on offer from week to week and students can choose from a variety of junior and senior options. These include art, crafts, photography, drama, music, floristry, hair and beauty and a whole range of field, water and racquet sports. There are also big school events such as quizzes, treasure hunts, discos, film night and Scottish and English country dancing.

By the end of her stay at Heathfield, a summer student might have baked a chocolate brownie, made soap, turned a somersault on the trampoline, created a beautiful flower arrangement, tried cricket, danced to the sound of the Scottish bag pipes or a hip-hop track, worn her own fashion creations on the cat-walk, produced a painting on glass, learned how to roll a kayak and enjoyed a relaxing hour of yoga!

Culture and Conversation

From the Model United Nations for advanced students, to Speak Dating where even beginners can practise their language skills, our staff offer a range of cultural opportunities for girls to meet and use their English outside the classroom. The Big Conversation, Question Time and Film Club are wonderful cross-cultural events and our Chill Out room offers an informal setting for girls to relax, chat, play games and read magazines.

Festivals and Shows

We believe in getting all the girls involved in whole-school events which will give them a new range of experiences while working together, using their English and developing new skills. Our Festival Afternoons, where staff offer a range of different themed activities, and Evening Shows, in which girls create their own performances, are extremely popular with the students.

On arrival girls will be assigned to one of four Houses, groups designed to allow different ages and nationalities to meet, mix and make friends. Houses compete against each other in a variety of fun activities including quizzes, arts competitions, sports tournaments and a swimming gala.

Activities Staff

Heathfield’s Activities Director, Bob Jones, is an experienced teacher who has pastoral experience as a boarding tutor and has run outdoor education expeditions in the UK and abroad. He is assisted by an Arts and Entertainment Coordinator and together they lead a team of more than 20 full-time sports teachers, coaches and life guards as well as trained artists, dancers, actors and musicians and specialist staff. Private tennis coaches offer individual lessons on site and horse riding is available at our local stables.

Please do look at the details and photographs of some of our activities and events on the separate pages to give you an idea of the huge range we offer and the fun the girls have while taking part.

Heathfield School: the year-round school accepts girls as boarders and day-boarders from age 11 to 18.
