I absolutely love Heathfield, it’s the best camp I’ve ever been to. I love all the staff because they are extremely kind and comforting.
It’s been my first year here and I’ve loved everything. The staff and helpers – they were all very kind, helpful and good fun.
A high-quality camp with staff who are all helpful, polite and professional. There is a great variety of activities that girls just love to participate in.

Meet the Senior Staff
One of the great strengths of Heathfield is the continuity of our staff and the personal service we can therefore offer. Over the years the senior staff have got to know many families well and we now even have daughters of some of our former students attending!
The Director and Registrar work year-round and can always be contacted in the office.
Director of Summer Courses
Helen Madaras has a degree in English Language and Literature and a Post Graduate teaching certificate in English and English as a Foreign Language. Helen first worked at Heathfield from 1982 to 1991 as Head of the English department and also ran the Summer School. In the early 1990s she gained wider experience as Academic Director of a large company, running a full time English school in London and ten summer courses round the country
In 1993 Helen started an academic year Educational Consultancy for overseas pupils and their families, providing boarding school placements and guardianship. She helped set up the regulatory body, the Association of Educational Guardians for International Students (AEGIS) and subsequently worked as an inspector. In 1994 she returned to Heathfield and has been running Summer School and Summer Camp since then.
Helen is married with three children and her younger daughter has progressed from being an enthusiastic Summer Camper to a member of the full staff team.
Registrar for Summer Courses
Linda Barber has been the Summer School Registrar since 1992 and she was responsible for helping to set up the Summer Camp for British girls in the following year. Linda also worked for the main Heathfield School for almost 20 years. She started as School Secretary and then became P.A. to the Deputy Head, both very busy year-round positions. Linda also took an active part in many other aspects of boarding school life and was part of a House staff team.
Before working at Heathfield, Linda was Personal Assistant to a Company Director in London and then ran her own secretarial agency. Linda is married with two daughters and has four grandchildren. In her free time she is involved in a great deal of charity and fund-raising work.
Linda deals with all aspects of students’ bookings and in the summer she very much enjoys meeting girls and families with whom she has been in contact throughout the year.
Tracey Scott has been working at Heathfield Summer School since 2001. She was soon promoted to Director of Summer Camp and using her management experience and extensive range of skills, she expanded the Camp to include many more of the artistic and creative activities which girls love. She then also took over responsibility for running the social programme of the Summer School.
In 2010 Tracey stepped up to the role of Deputy Director where she continues to have overall responsibility for both the Summer Camp and Summer School activities programmes. Tracey’s professional background is in travel and for many years she has been living overseas; she very much enjoys returning to England each summer and joining in the international mix that is Heathfield.
And to prove that Heathfield is really one big happy family, Tracey’s daughter and son both worked for several years as activities staff and Linda Barber, our Registrar, also happens to be Tracey’s mother!
Chris Green has a degree in Archaeology and Classics and a Post Graduate teaching certificate in Classics and English as a Foreign Language. Chris first worked at Heathfield as Head of Classics from 1988 to 1992. Since then, she has continued on occasions to work part-time in this department.
Chris trained as a Blue Badge Tourist Guide for London in 1993 and has been involved in Summer School as a London Guide since then. In addition, she is a qualified guide for the South East of England and director of the Corporation of London guide training course. She has also run educational courses for children and adults all over Britain.
In 2013, Chris returned to Heathfield and as part of her role as Assistant Director, she is in charge of summer trips. Using her teaching background and wide experience of guiding in Britain, she organizes and leads a variety of enjoyable and educational excursions.
Director of Activities
Andy Valner has a BA in Classical Civilisation and an MA in Classical Literature, both from the University of Nottingham, and a PGCE in Classics from King’s College London. He came to Heathfield main school as a fresh-faced, newly qualified teacher in 2011 and has been here ever since. Andy was promoted in 2021 to Assistant Head (Pastoral) and is the Subject Leader of Classics.
Andy is also a very keen sportsman and he joined the Summer School originally as a member of the activities team and then took on the role of Summer School Activities Director. In his spare time, if not watching sports, he loves to play tennis and golf or to escape with a good book. Andy and his wife Allison have a young son and daughter and enjoy going for long walks with their little dog Ajax.
