English with Style – Director’s Welcome
Dr Emma Newport, the Director of English with Style, has worked at Heathfield since 2005 and earned her PhD from King’s College London where she lectured for two years. She is now a lecturer in the English Department of Sussex University, where she recently won an award as one of the university’s top ten lecturers. Emma writes:
English with Style is designed for a bright generation of girls who want to learn about British life and culture and, at the same time, are keen to explore their own place as young women in the world. English with Style is unlike any other programme on offer – it is all about having fun and developing and celebrating your best self! You will meet and make some of your best friends at Heathfield and will enjoy a summer of unforgettable experiences…
Innovate and Inspire is this year’s theme. With young women like Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai leading the way in challenging and changing the world, at English with Style we will celebrate young women and have designed a programme just for older teens. Throughout the week, English with Style students live in Wyatt House, a separate boarding house just for older students.
Our trips will include a London theatre visit, which students always love, and a full day trip to London to explore the sights and sounds of the city – it is an unmissable experience and gives you a little flavor of what it might be like to live and study in London. Our course will explore personal development, with an emphasis on developing confidence, resilience, and tolerance; we will also look at the kinds of life skills necessary for living, studying and working in an international community.
We debate global issues and as there are many nationalities represented on the course, we have plenty of lively conversations and you will have a chance to share these discussions with British students as well. For those interested, we discuss how to apply to university and can offer support and advice on preparing to study in the UK.
In addition to all of this, you will enjoy facial care and subtle make-up from SpaceNK; creating and hosting your own party; taking part in design and textile classes; having a well-being evening with massage and relaxing with yoga; taking part in an evening of music and dance at the Talent Show; and attending the final night Farewell Party.
In 2019, we explored fast fashion and sustainability and students also particularly enjoyed a workshop held by two successful businesswomen on leadership and making your mark with confidence. Our annual London evening theatre trip took us to Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the world, and on the full-day London trip the girls visited The Wallace Collection of fine art which included a very popular Manolo Blahnik exhibition.
English with Style is about being inspired – and inspiring others! I hope you enjoy looking at the photos here and on the main page of our activities and the events that we have held.
